Burnet High School senior powerlifter Abby Smith won her weight class to qualify for the United States of America Powerlifting High School National Meet.
Her competed at the Texas Open Dec. 2-3, which is a sanctioned event of the USAPL. Smith had a squat of 260 pounds, a deadlift of 265 pounds, and a benchpress of 115 pounds while competing in the girls high school weight class of 123 pounds. The event was conducted at the Texas Strength Systems Gym in San Antonio.
“Abby won her category and lifted over the national qualifying total for her weight class,” Burnet head coach Tyler McIntosh said.
Those who follow powerlifting and the Lady Dawgs aren’t surprised by Smith’s success.
“Abby is a common name you see in our reports,” the coach said. “Abby has lifted in our program since her freshman year, is a three-time state qualifier, and was the regional champion of her weight class last year.”
What makes Smith a champion lifter is her work ethic and self belief, he added.
“She is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever coached, and I can’t wait to see how she does this season in our THSWPA competition,” he said.
The national meet is in Baton Rouge in April.
